Emi McColm - The Producer

I hope you will enjoy this Indonesian Language video series.

I was born in Pamotan, East Java, where the videos were filmed.

My father and many of my extended family still live there.

In producing the videos my motivation was to provided you with not only an insight into the language, but to open a window into the lives and environment of the people of my country.

I have been teaching Indonesian in Australia for the past 17 years.

Many of my students have been primary and secondary school teachers of Indonesian. As a consequence I produced the series with the needs and requirements of classroom teachers specifically in mind.

I believe that both teachers and students will gain not only in terms of language competency, but also in appreciation of those aspects of life in Indonesia that are different and more importantly; common to all our lives.

About Emi

I attended high school in Malang which is the major city near Pamotan.

I obtain BA (Marketing) at Brawijaya University in Malang and then work in the publications section of the Department of Agriculture in Jakarta.

I was involved with many projects dealing with farmers. During this time I undertook post graduate training at University of the Philippines at Los Banos and Curtin University in Western Australia.

Since 1984 I have lived and worked in Australia, initially being involved with agricultural development projects in Indonesia and then teaching Indonesian language at Latrobe and Curtin universities and the Language Centre in Melbourne.

In 1988 I started my own business the Indonesian Language Centre first in Mandurah and then in Fremantle.

From small beginnings the ILC became, at that time the largest private Indonesian language training organisation in Australia. Many of my students then and now are teachers of Indonesian.

This has given me insight into the needs and requirements of Indonesian teachers and an appreciation of the important elements in the development of language education for children at primary and secondary levels.

In 1999 I began various periods of working in Indonesia and training consultancies in Australia.

I continue to teach Indonesian and am currently working on a series of Indonesian texts.
